Leuven, Belgium, September 23-24, 2024
The eNOVATION project officially launched with a two-day kick-off meeting held at the “De Hoorn” conference venue in Leuven on 23 and 24 of September. This Horizon Europe-funded initiative aims to expand and reinforce the network of CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear) training centers, including the CBRN Centers of Excellence, in key regions such as the Atlantic coast of Africa (Rabat, Morocco), Central Asia (Tashkent, Uzbekistan), and Southeast and Eastern Europe (Tbilisi, Georgia, and Armenia).
The project’s primary goal is to modernize the training framework for first responders dealing with chemical and biological threats. It will assess and incorporate emerging tools and technologies for the detection, identification, monitoring, and decontamination of hazardous substances on-site. eNOVATION also introduces innovative training methods that feature updated courses, AI-supported technologies to enhance automation and usability, and the integration of augmented and extended reality (AR/XR) solutions.
The kick-off meeting brought together all project partners, including representatives from various research institutions and organizations across Europe and other regions including NCCN (coordinator of the project), Université catholique de Louvain, SAFE Foundation, ICCS, Safety Innovation centre, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, ISEMI, FOI, ADELFAS, JCBRN COE, Campus VESTA, War Studies University, West Midlands Police, METU, NUCZU, Fire Department of Dortmund, KEMEA, Regional Environmental Centre for Caucasus Georgia, CNRST Morocco, CMSA Armenia.
Professor Pasquale Gaudio and Dr. Alba Iannotti attended the meeting representing the University of Rome Tor Vergata and presenting the activities that will be carried out by Tor Vergata University in the tasks assigned.
Over the two days, participants engaged in collaborative discussions on project objectives, outlined work packages, and explored strategies for maximizing the impact of the project over the next three years.
The meeting set a strong foundation for collaboration, networking, and knowledge sharing, which are essential for achieving the project’s ambitious goals. The eNOVATION project is expected to significantly enhance the capabilities of first responders worldwide in managing CBRN incidents, ensuring a more coordinated and effective response to emerging threats.
