Dear colleagues,
From 24 to 26 February 2025, Amman hosted the kick-off meeting of the EU CBRN CoE Project 104, titled “Strengthening Crime Scene Forensics and Prosecution Capabilities in Investigating CBRN Incidents in the Middle East Region.”
Bringing together over 50 representatives from Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, the European Union, UNICRI (United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute), OPCW, INTERPOL, and NATO, this three-year, €2 million initiative aims to enhance forensic capacities across Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq—from crime scene investigation to courtroom proceedings.
We are proud to highlight that the University of Rome Tor Vergata is among the key partners in this project, alongside other Italian institutions, including ENEA, the Italian Ministry of Defence, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Fondazione SAFE.
Dr. Alba Iannotti participated in person on behalf of CBRNe Gate – University of Rome Tor Vergata – Master CBRNe, while Dr. Colomba Russo and the new team member, Dr. Sabrina Rao, contributed remotely.
This project represents an exciting new chapter for the CBRNe group at Tor Vergata University, involving both the Department of Biomedicine and Prevention, which leads the project activities for the university under the coordination of Prof. Andrea Malizia, and the Department of Industrial Engineering, which provides scientific support through Prof. Pasquale Gaudio.
By providing technical, law enforcement, and judicial support, the project will help national and regional authorities develop robust capabilities for managing and mitigating CBRN risks. Among its key milestones are:
• Strengthening crime scene investigation competencies
• Enhancing laboratory capabilities across the region
A special thanks goes to the CBRNe research team at Tor Vergata, whose expertise and dedication contribute significantly to this initiative.
We look forward to a successful collaboration and the impactful outcomes this project will bring.
Best regards,
CBRNe Directive Board
